Ask for Phone, Hours and Website When Someone Adds a Place

Written by Melinda Haughey

This article is about the Proxi admin app at app.proxi.co.

When you let people add places to a map, you can also ask them for the business's phone number, hours, and website. Those answers don't go onto the map pin — they go toward the listing behind it, and they wait for you.

This is how a map that visitors help build ends up improving your listings at the same time, instead of leaving you with a pile of pins and no contact details.

Turning the Questions On

Open the form editor for your map's add-a-place form and find the Place Details section. If you've never used it, there's a single button that sets up the usual three at once:

  • Ask Owners for Their Info (Phone, Email, Hours) — one tap, three questions.

After that, use Add a Question to pick more from the list. You'll always see Phone, Public Email, Hours, and Website, plus any of your own listing fields that can be answered on a form — plain text, numbers, dates, links, and so on.

Everyone Gets Asked

These questions show for every person who fills in the form, not only people who say they own the place. That's deliberate — a neighbor often knows the hours perfectly well, and since every answer waits for your review, there's nothing to be gained by hiding the question from them.

At the end of the form, in About You, there are two checkboxes:

  • I'm the owner, or a contact for this place — with a note underneath saying to leave it unchecked if they're just submitting it.

  • I'd like to keep Blue Heron Bakery up to date — this one only appears if they ticked the first, and it names the actual place as they type it.

Neither of these unlocks anything on the form. They tell you who you're hearing from, and whether this person wants to look after the listing from now on.

These Answers Behave Differently

It's worth being clear about the two kinds of questions on the same form, because they don't do the same thing:

  • Your collection's own questions — these describe the place on this map. They follow whatever approval setting the form has.

  • Listing questions — these describe the business itself, which your directory, your other maps, and the business's own portal all read from. They are always held for review. Nothing writes to a listing until you approve it.

That's why they sit in their own section with their own heading, and why a listing question can't be marked internal-only or read-only — it's a question for the person filling in the form, or it's nothing.

Good to Know

  • Change any question's wording with the Label box, and add a line of help underneath with Helper text. The Public Email question comes with a helpful note about using an address they're happy to share.

  • Answers arrive in Listing Updates alongside claims and sign-ups.

  • Drag the questions to reorder them — the order in the editor is the order people see.

  • For the rest of what a submission form can do, see Community Submissions.
