How to Set Up a Directory in Proxi and Customize It

This SOP explains how to create a new Proxi Directory, configure its settings, customize its appearance and behavior, and share or embed it. Follow these steps to build a directory that is ready for public use or website integration.

Key Steps

1. Create a new Directory from the dashboard 0:10

  • Go to your Proxi dashboard.

  • Under Assets, click Directory.

  • Select New Directory.

  • Choose the collection you want the directory to be associated with.

  • Confirm the directory is created before moving into settings.

2. Review and manage places in the directory 0:42

  • Open the Places section on the left-hand side.

  • Review all places currently associated with the directory.

  • Use Add a place to include new entries.

  • Adjust the fields tied to each place as needed.

  • Use Bulk edit to update multiple places at once, or edit places individually using the edit button on the right.

3. Feature important places and control list order 1:17

  • Use the star icon to mark a place as featured.

  • Featured places appear at the top of the directory list.

  • Go to List order to control how places are sorted.

  • Add a primary, secondary, or tertiary sort.

  • Sort by fields such as point number, category, or name depending on how you want the directory organized.

4. Configure the directory display and branding 1:44

  • Open Style > Display.

  • Enter a name for the directory.

  • Add a description that appears below the name.

  • Enable Hide header if the page already has its own header or if you want a cleaner embedded view.

  • Go to Style > Branding to customize the visual identity.

  • Update the primary color, secondary color, and font family.

  • Upload a logo and cover image.

  • Optionally hide Powered by Proxi at the bottom.

5. Set filters and search behavior 2:26

  • Review the Filters section.

  • If multiple filters or tags are available, they will appear at the top of the directory.

  • If no filters are configured, the directory will display as a simple list.

  • Decide whether to include search for users.

  • Turn search on if visitors need to quickly find specific places.

6. Choose whether to display a map and where it appears 2:41

  • Open the Map settings.

  • Decide whether the directory should show a map.

  • If enabled, choose the map placement:

    • Right of the listings as a tab.

    • Top of the listings.

  • Turn the map off if you want a cleaner listing-only layout.

7. Select the card layout and detail behavior 3:12

  • Go to Card > Styles.

  • Choose a layout such as Grid.

  • Select the loading behavior:

    • Paginated

    • Infinite scroll

  • Choose how item details open when a card is clicked:

    • Pop-up

    • Side panel

  • Adjust card appearance settings such as:

    • Corner radius

    • Padding

    • Image height

    • Title size

    • Text size

8. Choose an alternate overall layout if needed 4:14

  • Return to Layout settings.

  • Select the layout that best fits your use case:

    • Grid

    • List

    • Compact

    • Editorial

  • Consider pairing the layout with the map placement that best supports usability.

  • Choose the layout that best matches your content density and design goals.

9. Enable visitor actions and support options 4:35

  • Open Style > Visitor actions.

  • Allow visitors to add a place if you want to crowdsource directory entries.

  • Confirm that any visitor-submitted place will flow into the associated collection and related Proxi assets.

  • Add a help email so visitors know where to send questions or support requests.

10. Customize card content and sharing settings 5:09

  • Go to Card > Content.

  • Drag and drop fields to control what appears on the card.

  • Decide which fields should appear:

    • On the card itself

    • As buttons

  • Open Sharing settings.

  • Configure link preview settings.

  • Configure save to home screen settings.

  • Decide whether the directory should be publicly listed.

11. Preview, share, or embed the finished directory 5:38

  • Use View live to preview the directory before publishing or sharing.

  • Click Share to access distribution options.

  • Copy the share link for direct sharing.

  • Use the QR code for print or mobile-friendly distribution.

  • Copy the embed code to place the directory on a website.

Cautionary Notes

  • If you enable visitor submissions, review incoming places before relying on them publicly.

  • Be careful when using Hide header if the page does not already provide clear navigation or context.

  • If you hide Powered by Proxi, make sure branding requirements are still met.

  • Confirm the public listing setting before sharing externally.

  • Test the directory on desktop and mobile after changing layout, map placement, or card behavior.

Tips for Efficiency

  • Decide on your directory structure and sorting rules before adding many places.

  • Use bulk edit when updating multiple places to save time.

  • Preview the directory after each major change to catch layout issues early.

  • Keep branding assets like logo, cover image, and colors ready before setup.

  • Choose one primary layout first, then fine-tune card and map settings afterward.
