Make a Custom Map Style That Matches Your Brand

Written by Melinda Haughey

This article is about the Proxi admin app at app.proxi.co.

The built-in map looks cover most needs, but sometimes you want the map itself to feel like yours: land in your brand's soft blue, water in white, quieter street names, no state lines. A custom map style lets you start from any of the built-in looks and adjust the parts people notice, with a live preview while you work. Save it once and it's available on every map in your workspace.

Where to Find It

Open your map from the Maps page, then open the Display section in the settings rail on the left and expand Map style. At the end of the style tiles there's a dashed Custom tile. Click it to open the styler.

The Custom tile sits after the built-in looks. Styles you save show up here too, ahead of the built-in ones.

Start From a Look

The styler opens as a window with your controls on the left and a preview of the map on the right. The first thing to do is pick a starting look under Start From. Every built-in look except the satellite ones is available, and the preview switches as soon as you click one.

A quick heads up: picking a starting look clears any changes you've made below it, so choose your base first and adjust second.

Change the Colors

Under Colors there are seven swatches: Land, Water, Roads, Buildings, Parks & Green Space, Label Text, and Borders. Each one starts out showing the color the look already uses, so you can see what you're changing. Click a swatch to pick a color, or type a hex code like #cbdcea into the box next to it. Clear the box to go back to the look's own color.

If you change your mind about everything, Reset changes at the top of the Colors group puts all of your edits back without changing the starting look.

Soften the Whole Map

The Look group has two controls that change the feel of the map without picking individual colors:

  • Mute colors is a slider that fades the map's colors toward gray. It's the quickest way to make your pins stand out. Any color you've set yourself in the Colors group stays exactly as you set it.

  • Road width makes streets Thin, Normal, or Bold.

Labels

Under Labels you can decide how much text shows on the map and how it looks:

  • How many — None, Fewer, or Normal. Fewer keeps neighborhoods and main streets and hides small street names, which is what most people want when a map feels busy.

  • Size — Small, Normal, or Large. Large is handy for printed maps and for audiences who appreciate bigger type.

  • Font — pick from a short list of typefaces, or leave it on This look's font.

  • Country names and State & region names — turn each on or off.

Show or Hide Map Features

The Show and Borders groups are simple switches:

  • Transit lines — rail and similar lines.

  • Route numbers on highways — small route-number plaques along highways.

  • Buildings — building footprints.

  • Country borders and State & province borders.

Some looks don't draw certain features at all. When that's the case, a switch is grayed out with a note that says so. Borders, country and state names, and route numbers are the exception: turn one of those on and Proxi adds it to the map even if the look you started from didn't have it, so you can put state lines on a watercolor map, for example.

Save It and Use It Everywhere

  1. Click Save Style. If it's a new style, you'll be asked to Name this style. Pick something you'll recognize in a list, like "Harbor Blue".

  2. Click Save Style again. The map you're editing switches to your new style right away.

Your saved styles appear as tiles at the start of Map style on every map in your workspace, so you can apply the same look to all of them with one click. Hover a saved style and click the small pencil to change it. Saving a change updates every map that uses that style, and the window tells you so before you save. From the same window you can also Delete a style; maps that were using it go back to the look it was built on.

Good to Know

  • Anyone on your team can open the styler and try every control. Saving a custom style is part of the paid plans. On a free workspace you'll see a note at the top of the window and an upgrade prompt on the Save button.

  • Your custom style follows the map everywhere it's shown: the live map, embeds on your own website, and printed maps. Nothing extra to set up.

  • Your pins, categories, and clusters aren't part of the map style. Change those under Markers. See Changing Your Map's Pin Icons, Shapes, and Size.

  • Closing the window with Cancel throws away unsaved edits; nothing changes on your map until you save.
