How to adjust your Marker style, size, numbers on markers and point clustering

This SOP explains how to customize map markers in Proxi so map points display correctly and consistently. It covers marker style, field-driven categories, marker size, point numbers, and clustering options.

Key Steps

1. Open Marker Settings 0:10

  • In the Proxi toolbar, locate the Markers settings for your map points.

  • Review the available display options before making changes.

  • Start with Marker Style, which controls how map points appear on the map.

2. Choose a Marker Style 0:18

  • Decide whether all markers should look the same or be driven by a field.

  • If using the same style for all markers:

    • Select a color.

    • Select a shape.

    • Optionally search for an icon from the built-in library.

    • You may also upload a custom image if needed.

  • Use this option when you want a uniform visual style across all points.

3. Set Markers by Field When Needed 0:32

  • If your map points should vary by category or another data field, choose Driven by field.

  • Select the appropriate field, such as Category.

  • This is the most common setup when different point types need different marker appearances.

4. Edit Marker Options for Each Category 0:44

  • Click Edit options and more to customize field-driven markers.

  • Open each marker option and select Edit marker.

  • For each category, choose one of the following:

    • A color and shape

    • A built-in icon

    • A custom image

  • Repeat this for every category that needs a unique marker style.

5. Adjust Marker Size 1:17

  • Use the size control to resize the markers.

  • Drag the size slider until the markers are easy to see without overcrowding the map.

  • Confirm the size works well at the zoom levels your users will most often view.

6. Display Point Numbers on Markers 1:28

  • If you want markers to show assigned point numbers, enable Numbers on markers.

  • Select the correct number field that contains the point number.

  • Make sure you choose the intended field, especially if multiple numeric fields exist in the dataset.

7. Configure Clustering and Spread Stacked Pins 1:43

  • Adjust clustering based on how close points appear on the map.

  • Choose between light clustering or tight clustering depending on how much grouping you want.

  • If multiple pins share the same location, enable the option to spread out stacked pins.

  • Use spreading for common overlap scenarios such as multiple locations at the same address.

Cautionary Notes

  • Ensure the selected field matches the data you want to represent; choosing the wrong field can make markers misleading.

  • If using custom images, verify the image is clear and appropriately sized for map display.

  • When enabling point numbers, confirm the selected number field contains the correct identifiers.

  • Clustering can hide individual points if set too aggressively, so test the map at different zoom levels.

  • Spreading stacked pins is especially useful for shared addresses, but it may change how densely packed areas appear.

Tips for Efficiency

  • Use field-driven markers when you have many categories to avoid manually styling each point.

  • Keep a consistent color/shape system so users can quickly recognize categories.

  • Test marker size and clustering together, since changing one can affect readability of the other.

  • If your map has many overlapping points, enable clustering first, then fine-tune spread settings.

  • Save time by standardizing marker styles across similar maps or projects.
